The Official Wheaties and the Box Tops for Education Stores were managed for General Mills by Resolution, Inc. an e-commerce solutions company that provided e-commerce store development, fulfillment, and product development including sourcing and on-demand customization and manufacturing services.
The official Wheaties store’s main attraction was a custom manufactured Wheaties box whereby visitors would submit their own photos to be put on an actual Wheaties box, or drink bottle, mug or keychain. I refined the workflow so that we would process incoming photographs, retouch them in Adobe Photoshop to remove backgrounds and enhance them to appear in the layout of the box design. These processed images would be batch loaded into Adobe InDesign using a custom script and sent off to a manufacturer for the boxes to be made and returned for fulfillment. I trained freelance graphic artists and our staff graphic artist to silhouette the photographs and prepare them for manufacturing. These boxes were a popular consumer gift for birthdays and Holidays, but were an even bigger hit with corporate awards presentations where often hundreds of employees would be rewarded for their efforts with a custom Wheaties box.
Box Tops for Education Official Online Store
Box Tops for Education was a program initiated by General Mills in 1996 to help school systems earn money for books, supplies, computers and playground equipment. General Mills would print the coupons on the box tops of their popular products like Cheerios, and school kids would collect these box tops to earn money for their school. I provided art direction and graphic design for these efforts, including custom collection bin standees for collecting box tops in grocery stores, retail locations and school lobbies.
